Isn’t it funny how respectful a major corporation gets when it gets caught in public focus doing what it normally does as a matter of company policy to its workers and customers. The battle plan is, of course, provided by endless batteries of lawyers who are paid to come up with every possible contingency and then provide an escape route. One of the best of course, is a sudden bout of phony tears. If you go by the rules of killing an endangered species is so much more repugnant than killing a bunch of children of your avowed enemy in line with a well-published fiction of their culpability, who is the wiser? After all, if their was a divine power beyond mankind, to really fear, then there would be lighting bolt quick retribution along the lines of, “Release the Kraken!” But thankfully not. So any entity with the well-funced authority of a big budget and a customary number of local officials in the pocket, is pretty safe as long as they don’t run over a puppy with a truck in front of a camera. Well, at least no more than once.
At this point, you can pretty much ceaselessly demean and denigrate any overwhelming majority by holding over them some possible past offense that was mythologically perpetrated upon a conveniently publicized minority. Sharks have suffered a genocidal ignominy since, “Jaws”, which, of course was the inspired tiny little goddess in red of the cinema that sprang from the forehead of our foremost national publicist of eternal victims everywhere. Yet now that the once overwhelming constituency of these denizens of the deep has been demoted to the status of being near to extinction, they have become equally a new class of victim where ‘we’ as mankind are, “yes”, once again to blame. Could there be a causal linkage of the crisis of self-image here of the shark’s essence being revealed as an irrevocable bio-hazard? After all, we have been told by so many that their only mission in life is to roam the oceans of the world swimming tirelessly ever forward to search and destroy. Not unless you consider mankind, or certain segments of same perpetually misbehaving, as naught but a deadly cancerous virus that offers only the recourse of detection and total elimination? What a convenient position to take to vouchsafe the well being of a creature as voracious in behavior as the organization that has transgressed against it? The ironies, when extended to the various well-publicized daily crises of the world, abound!
