Guns are the most beautiful instruments of technology that inevitably lead to unfortunate consequences. This little bit of stilted wisdom is anathema of course to anyone who has not been brought up to understand their value in both practice and prophesy. Anyone who truly understands their value feels a simultaneous sense of well-being and a healthy fear of inadvertently unleashing their deadly potential. Maybe those people who ride motorcycles at top speed down a highway without a helmet might in some way have a sense of this. But, it is not likely.
It’s too bad that the general population and the few elite folks that guide them don’t really have a handle on the fact that a society that is built on guns and their free use cannot suffer the hypocrisy of ignorance in pretending to support the notion of a peaceful free bountiful society. When the truth is so unabashedly evident that the reason that this culture remains preeminent like all the empires that have crumbled to dust before it is that the doctrine of overwhelming force is the only real bulwark that allows everyone to pretend that its opposite is the prevailing driving notion. How sad but true is the fact that in this world you have to protect what’s your’s while equally convincing the other guy to give up a hefty portion of his share. That’s Capitalism. Convincing the many to support the few. This notion is simply the evil twin of its diametric opposite, Communism (AKA, Socialism) or those other ‘isms’ thought up by an anonymous few to keep the rest of us marching forth in lock step toward the brink of eternity.
But then, you’ve all heard this before in so many times and ways and it gets tiresome so you turn on the TV and sink into the convenient notion that the way of the world couldn’t be so crass or unforgiving. Yet, occasionally in the dead of night the truth is written amidst the shadows trailing across the ceiling, that your life is just a means to someone else’s ends. We all fall victim to this form of thinking and it becomes ingrained in our behavior. The discovery of youth fades into habitual thought and we step within the narrowly defined walls of the rut that we have carved out after years of rethinking the nuances of our daily routine. The dirty little secret of those who so raucously publicly defame their existence is that they want to be the only ones who have a right to wield them over the rest of us defenseless others.
So some take up constant practicing to see how steady their aim still is after decades of the illusion of eternal youth. And face the fact that their abilities have waned in the interim and that golden moment of frivolous youth has de-evolved into the realization of slow and inevitable decline. The precision of cold steel, shiny brass and finely checkered hardwoods congealed in so many exotic yet forcefully direct configurations defy the notion of dissolution when gripped tight in hard focus on a distant target. “God may have made man, but Samuel Colt made all men equal.” A terrible notion in light of the memory of the many millions that have died in violence from their selfish use but a comfort to those willing to unashamedly confront the truth of their usefulness in holding on to what remains worth having this all too imperfect world.
