When archeologists examine artifacts from long dead cultures, they examine both monuments and pottery shards. Since our current stratum of culture seems based on virtual footprint less activities the best we can muster is movies, TV’s reruns and the collective memory of the older generation. Since the era of short temporary memory is currently at its apex no doubt as a result of additives to water, food and air, the offer of recall of past eras might be considered tenuous at best. But if one probes the longstanding terminology of our consumer based cult terms like “Save Money Now“,”Exceptional Value“, and “Don’t Miss Out!“, among all others, don’t seem to have the same resonance as in previous times of a decade or two past. Their referential usage no longer translates the same sense of lifestyle that their face value infers. Consider if you will bank ads!
In the nineteen-eighties “Mr and Mrs” average customer were approached by these ad’s in terms of saving their hard won earnings for a vacation or the paraphernalia that was associated with same. This would include big ticket items like extra cars, boats, and caravans and all the seasonal sporting equipment that your most favorite resort would accommodate. Then a decade or so later as disposable income faltered in the public arena, one would be solicited to bank based fiat cash upon the promised ability to consolidate your home equity for the mental redoubt of college education for your children to ensure them getting ahead as well as home repairs and necessary tasks that the cost of living no longer allowed for. And now of course, with the uber-cult addiction of mobile telecommunication based lifestyles, the banking branch ad’s tendrils push maximizing one’s time on the job that you’re applying for or attempting to simply keep above water and survive.
Consider that the rap is the same but the goals have dramatically been shifted from that of casual diversion to absolute survival. Does anyone bother to consider that in an age when the best and brightest can only hope to lease rather than buy a paltry number of ill conceived durable goods that add only cost if not the outright burden of cyclical bouts of planned obsolescence due to an infernal rate of corporate devised technical marketing evolutions, what sort of future can one hope for? Forget what you’ve been indoctrinated about in terms of the horrors of the implementation of slavery from times past. The proportions of a global world based upon ceaseless and arbitrary change invoking the chasing the golden calf towards an ultimate utopia while burning up everything in the path of same forms a new level of the infernal by even the biblical sense of same.
Has modern society fallen quite literally like an angel of a Christian based God to re-devise humanity into a hive where one’s ability to choose is absolutely regulated to come out to predetermined policies benefiting the many for the sake of a nominal few? If scientists from another distant realm or dimension were to analyze this shift to a worker ant mentality from one foster the goal of harmonious independence then what conclusions might be drawn? One need not stress their own noodle too long to realize that this corporate body demands more of those remaining as individual than the simple bargain of their souls in the future hereafter. It requires their past and the present as well as all their children and biological offspring to come.
The ‘devil’ and his star struck followers as they are now posed does indeed put forth a new vision of a better life than before. I think that the cost of this sort of ‘once in a lifetime offer’ is way too high to afford no matter how much it is marked down or promoted on the cheap!
