The free in freedom
There is always a segment of a politician’s speech when the notion of “FREEDOM” is cited in conjunction with the United States of America. Where the supposition is that the conversation is describing some form of Frank Capra illustrated social ethic that old dusty actors like Jimmy Stuart or a Henry Fonda would have been wrapped up in along with the shawl of the stars and stripes, the context of same seems more a syllabic disconnect between “FREE” and “DOM”. The second portion seemingly an antonym to the first. The absence of coercion in choice of action posed against the overbearing notion of the cohesive application of same. In the job market of the Internet in our pluralized Global society this means a systematized strata of transparent algorithmic constraints. In the terminology of a founding father like a Jeremy Bentham, a structurally implemented all seeing eye that one resides under but that one cannot engage in any significant way. The process of social management of the complex stratum of individuals classified by every imaginable category by an interlocking system of corporate oligarchies who tend the ideas and outlooks of these ‘baby chicks’ from cradle to grave. The “FREE” part pertaining to a territorial land office rush style assault upon the rights of usage for this general population through monopolization of resources and standard modes of communication that have been made implicit in this society.
This collection of descriptive terms being more than politicized rhetoric when one is faced with the prospect of finding gainful employment in the modern urbanized environment of privatized wealth distribution and the daily manipulation of its interchange. Where in millennia past you once could not gain access to God’s house without giving it’s keepers a hefty cut, one is now a vehicle for relentless taxation. Every necessity of life has been removed from ones grasp and placed within a vending machine mentality of pay or waste away. Food, water, shelter, clothing, have all been given an assessed value. The rhetorical freedoms of, “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”, take on a completely different meaning in this context bringing to mind the image of a dray animal ceaselessly motivated by both carrot and stick, seeking release from its dilemma of enslavement. In this sense, the original term is in fact an inversion of meaning where constant coercion and constraint become the most relevant elements rather than their opposite. Somewhat like the visual conception of fiat currency based commerce devised by Henry Wallace, there is a substantive gap between those who have the discretion to manipulate the governing structure for the benefit of a few and the rest of us who by its implementation can little choice but to comply if we want to continue to draw breath. This then is the fittest definition of “TYRANNY” that one could devise cast in a thin layer of waking illusion.
There is a constant brew of incessant persuasion that when routinely dissected defaults quickly to a conflict of opposites that the subject has been indoctrinated to absorb. The lingering impression of the taste of carrot lodged in the intellect and the stinging ache of the stick still very palpable to the unconscious mind. The tradition of an ancient Pharoah’s implements sold and resold in a sugar coated dream world of desires carefully managed to ensure productivity and eventually meticulously timed self-destruction. Ideologies aside, this corporate based mentality serves at the foundation of its enterprise. The same enterprise that led to the annihilation of the previous civilization that once tread this very soil some three centuries previous. The definition of “FREE” then is merely an exercise in charting a matrix of overlapping dependencies that one’s children like one’s self has been born into. The position of an indentured servant tasked to the perpetuation of one’s own enslavement. Perhaps the term “LIBERTY” would be a better avatar to engage in one’s hopes for the future?
