Some people celebrate their victories but this is a time of recognizing one’s shortcomings and acknowledging one’s failures. We have supposedly lost the notion of original sin not by the blood of some savior or by a special form of enhanced celestial awareness but rather by complete indulgence in ever excess. There is not degradation or heinous act that is not frequently enjoyed if not in actual performance than in simulation through vicarious virtual performance upon WIFI airwaves or a disk set from the local Best Buy. Self-abasement seems common these days before petty entities passing themselves off as institutions responsible for the stewardship of society in general but in reality enfranchised only to dissolve any honest effort by individuals to better their circumstance into a useless folly of wasted effort serving only the continuation of a larger program of ever increasing exploitation of material resources.
Where does that leave the notion of morality and dignity? A spirit of competitiveness in all the arenas of human experience have left this dominant culture with the morals of hyenas. Masters of a world that sees ones and zeros as a daisy chain of deception, enslavement and planned genocides while priding themselves on a chameleon-like ability to go from perennial persecutor to perpetual victim at the drop of a newspaper or the spin of an online blog.
The universe that they offer is an emotional vacuum that removes the subtlety of compassion and initiative and replaces it with futility and empty useless existence as a part of a penal colony of slaves and serfs beholden to the illusion of an overbearing global state. The golden promise of living in a self-imposed state of endless angst completely certain that the next moment is equally capable of the carrot of eternal material fulfillment under the lash of the possibility of destruction readily present just around the corner. A mindless virus has more heart and purpose in its parasitic mission to search out and acquire a host. As a species, we have failed not because of an inability to rise above our default animal circumstance but rather because humankind have suppressed those primal natures that have suggested harmony over conflict with our immediate surroundings. We pick flowers from the soil to watch them die in the abstraction of a glass bowl rather than enjoy them in the wild and risking a view of that undeniable fact that we are all part of something greater than the daily practice of our own seven deadly sins.
