OK, let’s not just bitch out the latest perceived slight or spit at the latest news byte ignominy but talk about a real incident, a real situation. Picture your mother, the version of the one that your love and that loves you. She has just past her ninth decade and is suffering from osteoarthritus, depression, hypertension, and chronic elimination issues connected to hemorrhoids. After all, one of the first things, you find out in your golden years is that the government doesn’t want you to be alive unless you are already so healthy and well to do that you don’t need the funds that you spent seven decades signing over to them as part of their supposed social welfare based caring for larger society. Like the insurance companies, the only thing that they care for that’s larger is the growth of the revenue amassed from their bureaucracies shaking down newer younger more profitable members. But I am getting ahead of my story.
So the name of the game in current healthcare is supplemental insurance. The larger economic system is specifically set up to slowly strip you of your assets especially after a catastrophic illness and leave you helpless by the time you reach old age in the most appropriate category of the least expensive (effective) care. This basically means, drugs to numb your pain and cheap supplements and prescriptions, the interactions of which might no doubt reduce your lifespan to make your statistics fit within the latest business corporate model for distribution of funds based on advancing age. The complimentary medical industry like any other efficient bloodsucker has groomed itself to fit itself to the neck of the public via governmental help.
My ninety plus mother initially pays higher premiums to BCBS and goes to what is a premium hospital based medical service provider. She has already been cut off from physical therapy by a shift from the Medicare budget ceding funds to ACA before the 2012 presidential election. Its geriatric service facility is based at the end of a corridor of more than a half a city block in length. No wheel chairs are ever provided in the immediate vicinity of this promenade leaving the clients however sick they may be to struggle along on cane and walker exhausting themselves in the process. Then of course they have to wait in line to be checked in. Then of course they have to wait till you are called. When you see the doctor, or the doctor designate, you are poked a bit, prodded and then given the usual pep talk and possibly a referral to another physician that will pretty much put them through the same thing in a another part of the same facility. A new doctor is put into the mix after the first one suddenly disappears. Initially they look her over and prescribe a bunch of what ten years previous were considered standard tests for women. But then the Dr. runs out after her and cancels everything in favor of just the same old minimal nothing. Along the way, BCBS begins double dipping a Medicaid account under my mother’s name for supplementing the deductible. So she is paying higher monthly premiums but they are getting a kickback from her asset spend down on the sly.
OK, that’s the playing field for most. So then after running through most of the paltry financial legacy gleaned from the pickings that the government and corporations hadn’t lapped up, my mother has to switch to a Medicare based deductible swan name-saked provider where she only has to pay a moderate deductible. Once again, the medical vendors working under this corporate entity are covertly taking advantage of indirectly billing her Medicaid spend down in the process. She goes to an ACA happy heavily Liberal leaning J-Doctor who burns incense and hands out Vitamin C powder who listens very sympathetically but does nothing but refill her heavily narcotic pain prescription. Her normal quantity of hypertension medicine is cut sown numerically based upon some new systemic national initiative. This goes on until the Dr. prescribes a diuretic that not only drives my mother’s system into a collision course with disaster but leads to complications that eventually degenerate into a physically debilitating condition. Her mobility already dependent upon a walker reduced from a long stroll down the hall to a few steps to the toilet. The Dr. in the meantime had gone on vacation and his staff had not considered it necessary to inform him even when he had returned after several weeks. It was time to change Dr.’s.
The next Dr. she had left several years before as her staff at that time had a bad habit of not following through to make appointments for her. For some reason my mother still had confidence in that Dr. How foolishly trusting. By this time, she could barely walk well but due to my changing her diet to food and supplements that were conducive to not aggravating her arthritis, she was feeling incrementally better. The Dr. again very caringly insisted that my mother should go to the hospital for a few days. I object based upon expense of the accumulated deductible and more importantly her weakened physical condition as well as bad previous experience with the recommended hospital. The institution was known for aggressive billing that sometimes was know for double billing patients. So my mother goes into the hospital and for four days is tormented and starved as she endures excruciating pain trying to sleep upon a rack of a high tech hospital bed. The Dr. comes at the end of her stay and tells her that treatment will start on an outpatient basis with two other different Dr.’s. “Oh by the way”, SHE (too) is going on vacation half way around the world! The following week of course I find after numerous calls that no physician referral has been made so she can’t see them till the Dr. comes back from vacation and sets it up. Then a week later, we find out that the healthcare provider won’t pay for any of it and my mother will have more of her spend down assets tasked to this little sojourn.
So knowing precious little about her condition after all all this as to what will help her incessant bouts of pain that leave her reduced to tears, she is shit out of luck with even more big bills to the relentless carnivore of the state and federal government . Welcome to Obamacare, SUCKER!
