How do you paint a dream? A place that once was rented. A second place that overlapped another where part of your life was stored. An old girlfriend of some twenty years past. Asking the patriarch for a secluded place to spend the night with her. Three one-story units side by side up a suburban diagonal. A strange cubicle that had a sliding mirror that afforded the view not of the bedroom or bathroom but of an office bound classroom. One that in turn showed the intended bungalow as being but a corner of a warehouse floor set up as a flea market of small commercial stalls. The feeling of trespassing, of being discovered to be out of place growing ever stronger. All impressions tightly fitting interlocking pieces.
How strange this sense of internal panic when the creation can only be attributed to your own creation. This empty universe of recycled ether. Palpable experience of life turned back into vague recollection that lays crushed under the weight of so many now insubstantial other ones that range back to the beginning of this mortal existence. Perhaps even further back still? Are we just puppets? Who plays punch and who plays Judy? Where does the Devil come in to lambast? Such deep feelings intermixed to produce what? This large expansive waking dream that I am a part of that runs on and on and on? Hurtling towards the expected end with no specific conclusion in mind.
Who then really rearranged the chips? Archons or pawns? Vain little noble creatures that perhaps I exist only as a footnote. Strung together synaptic wiring haphazardly shorting out at key trunks. All to get an experience of the physical to this lonely little brain forgotten in its glass jar. Who could paint this sort of stuff with a brush? A biped world of insect proportions. Growing, growing, ever expanding! From “sailor’s tales and sailor’s tunes” to “hurricanes and maroons” all told again in the ancient way. A story never grows old when it is forgotten once gain. All one can do is be rested assured that the rhyme eventually will overcome the reason.
