It is snowing outside for the second Sunday in a row here in the country’s midsection and I am reminded of the importance that phenomena to the upcoming holiday season. Sow is an essential medium to the mantra of what no doubt remains enigmatically referred to as a “White Christmas“. Sweep aside the politics and social engineering the topic of Santa even in its barest observance is an important one to preadolescent’s and a number of a few echelons of former generations that are nearing that point of natural extinction. Though certain significant major multinationals have absconded with the symbology. One in particular attempting to replace the jolly old fellow with brain dead furry white oafs holding their syrupy saccharine product. The old enforcer of the spirit of Christmas and well aware of who has been naughty and nice demands a healthy white covering over his domain. Especially upon the morning of the twenty-fifth of December! This is to provide a more than adequate environment to ensure immediate use of the more classic utensils of the year. Snow sleds and warm knit scarfs from doting aunts being two examples.
Of course the former winter olympics of yesteryear has been replaced along with almost all other exertions physical with the smart phone and games computer. The default inescapable activity of the season being the necessity of shoveling out the driveway to accommodate the descent of relatives and friends at afternoon get together’s over the ceremonial cooked ‘goose’. Much has been done to derail these customs over past decades to disenfranchise these once dominant ceremonies that include mistletoe, egg nog and good cheer to strangers. The demand of commercialism serving as the last remaining proper excuses for toleration of the whole business. Those self-serving few who run the vast empires of finance and semi-useful commodities only tolerate useful mindsets as they pertain directly to their annual bottom line. A point of view that representatives of the old ways like Jacob Marley’s ghost seem wholly unable to contend with. Though the notion of the central characters are temporarily released from the PC gulag of Siberian frostiness. They are reeducated as good cultural Marxists refraining from descending to the Capitalist mentalities of yore that concentrate on strong family units based upon old European traditional roles of a strong father supported by an ever giving generous mother. The upper shelves of closets of yesteryear once beyond reach supplanted by FedEx and last minute forays into nearby ‘big box‘ corporate franchise chains that assure the lowest prices for the currently most popular fad based items.
Yet, for the diminishing rank and file of the immediate post WW2 generation whose emotions and memories are enlivened by the assembly of the different signs and symbols of Christmas that congeal at the end of the Winter solstice, the magic remains a steady sense of warmth in its nostalgia. The dim memories and mental echoes of old relatives and friends long passed on and the anecdotes surrounding those memorable Christmas’ past evoke heart wrenching pause and an occasional bout of tears flooding the eyes. That time when the generation that sired them did their damnedest to ensure that their children would never suffer the hard realities of infernal poverty and lack of future expectations that their generation had suffered up to the centuries’ midpoint. The special generation when the hard experience of evil both foreign and domestic was ushered out of their consciousness and replaced with a menu of pleasant and hopeful sentiments taken in some cases from the popular entertainment scene to bolster older lingering cultural endowments. The amalgam unsullied by the intervention of a need to exhaust the family resources so much as find avenues to expend direct effort to produce things by hand that to this day remain rare family heirlooms. If the transition to autumn brings restless unsatisfied entities from their cold clay then the Christmas season gives them supplication from the still living and ultimately resurrection. The much vaunted holiday spirit that the philistines of the economy trade their wares on in fact becomes a renewal of ties with the past and present in a continuity of family and strong ties that serve to preserve one’s hope for a positive future no matter what the coming new year brings.
